06.28.04 - San Diego Chargers fourth-round draft pick Shaun Phillips raised his hand during the question-and-answer period and inquired about the “Rookie Wall” athletes hear they’ll hit their first year of playing a 16-game NFL regular-season schedule.
The wall is reality cautioned Carolina Panthers cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., the star of last season’s NFC Championship game with three interceptions. And so are many other on-the-field and off-the-field tales that the 255 draft picks attending the NFL Rookie Symposium, now in its eighth year, may have heard by now but not be taking seriously.
Manning was one of four players coming off their rookie year who sat on the “Life as a Rookie” panel at the Symposium that began Sunday and finishes Tuesday at La Costa, Calif., near San Diego. The Symposium includes presentations, videos and workshops. The subjects cover personal finance, life skills, personal conduct, media policy, substances of abuse, family issues and player development.
The players joining Manning on the panel, moderated by the NFL Network host Rich Eisen, were Indianapolis Colts tight end Dallas Clark, Detroit Lions safety Terrence Holt and Philadelphia Eagles receiver Greg Lewis.
“I know you’re sitting in your chair thinking this isn’t going to happen to me,” Holt said, adding that’s what he did a year ago. “The time will come.”
Clark explained players must learn to say no because so many people will ask for money.
“I’m from a small town, and even there I’m asked a lot for money,” said Clark, a first-round pick out of Iowa in 2003. “This is money you have to hold on to for the rest of your life. It’s hard to say no to people you want to help, but you have to. People you don’t expect will come up to you.”
Lewis, an undrafted free agent last year, mentioned the stories about women looking for players with money.
